Caelan Doris Included in Irish Team But Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby team announcement news

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has selected captain Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the summer tour.

Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, the team will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as Farrell opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's three league matches this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a cap.

Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Ulster second row Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for Doris should the captain does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to the US on Tuesday.
