Delhi Wakes Up to Hazardous Pollution After Diwali
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "severe" category.
Alarming Pollution Readings
Multiple areas of Delhi showed an AQI over 500, which translates to ten times the safe threshold recommended by the WHO.
In some locations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than safe standards.
Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts
Since 2020, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous haze that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather sets in.
Nevertheless in recent months, the recently formed city leadership appealed to the highest court to propose a relaxation of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Legal Decision and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, judges complied with the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Several air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded air quality spiking around the night hours to the most severe measurements observed during celebrations in at least three years.
Cross-Border Consequences
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing declining pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.
Long-Standing Pollution Problem
The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have remained as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Around celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Various Contamination Factors
This crisis in Delhi is caused by a mix of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and haze from agricultural fires in nearby areas of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as winter air sets in.
Medical and Economic Toll
The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple research.
These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.
Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely mortalities per year in the capital.
